The Child and Family Studies area (CFS) includes faculty and students from several department programs including child-clinical, developmental, and school psychology and represents all three of the department's PhD concentrations (Clinical, Experimental, and School). The common core of faculty research interests is a commitment to examining age-related changes in cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Basic and applied research projects are conducted in a variety of settings including day care programs, homes, schools, and local community agencies. From this diversity, graduate students can construct individualized programs of study and be involved with a wide variety of research topics and populations. CFS faculty focus on preschool and school-age children, with research interests in their assessment, education and special education, family and peer relations, historical perspectives, interventions such as behavior therapy, the acquisition and use of knowledge, problem solving, social cognition, and personality development. The faculty and students have teaching assignments to courses related to the CFS area and many provide supervised services through the department's Psychological Services Center. Weekly meetings are held on Friday afternoons during which faculty, students, and community service workers make presentations. Faculty and students from related areas in and outside of the Psychology Department are invited to participate. For a copy of the policy manual click here.
