I-O ActivitiesThe field of I-O psychology is broadly concerned with the theories and principles of behavior science as they can be applied in work settings to solve "real world" problems that occur among individual people, groups, and organizations. The discipline of I-O psychology focuses on behavior and behavior change in work environments. There are five general areas of research and practice in Industrial and Organizational psychology: employee selection and placement, training and development, performance management, organizational development and change, and ergonomics (human factors engineering). Graduate students pursuing training in I-O psychology at The University of Memphis are exposed to all of these subdisciplines through class work, research opportunities and placements in applied settings. However, we are especially interested in the first three of these areas. In fact, much of the work that is currently going on involves the application of web-based training to industrial, as well as non-industrial settings. Students in I-O take graduate courses offered in Psychology, as well as in Management in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics. They are also provided opportunities to engage in research with faculty in Psychology and in Management. We can be found in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's list of training programs in Industrial, Organizational, and Applied Psychology, and in the list of graduate programs published by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.
